Position: Research Forester Graduate Assistant

Status: Part-time, (20hrs/week)

Department: Institute of Forestry

Reports to: Director of the Institute of Forestry

Start Date: Fall Semester 2025

Compensation: Stipend, Room, and Tuition

Stipend is $5000/semester and tuition scholarship is 100%, but students are responsible for program fees, including textbook fees charged each semester, and meals during residencies.

Description:

The Research Forester will provide research and management support to the Director of the Institute of Forestry and other faculty and staff affiliated with the Institute.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Management and analysis of data from on-going research projects and forest management activities.
• Perform forestry research and management fieldwork (e.g. data collection, operational inventory, timber sale administration, etc.).
• Provide supervision of student field crews.
• Partial contribution to and review of written reports, manuscripts, and new research proposals.
• Perform miscellaneous administrative duties related to Institute research, management, or teaching activities, including event planning and organization, van driving, academic support, etc.
• Pursue a research-based Final Project under the supervision of the Institute of Forestry. That project will utilize data from the College Forest and contribute to on-going research projects and partnerships the Institute is engaged in or developing, with a particular focus on applications integrating remote sensing data into quantitative growth and yield modeling.
• Assist with other duties as needed, including driving vans to support academic programming, or assigned by the Director of the Institute of Forestry .

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree from a four-year institution in Forestry and enrollment in Paul Smith’s College Master’s degree programs.
• Ability to work with a broad range of diverse individuals and groups to form a safe and inclusive campus community.
• Clear evidence of strong analytical skills and demonstrated field forestry experience.
• Proficiency with R, python, or other analytical coding languages and with ArcPro or QGIS software.
• Strong interest in forest biometrics or closely related quantitative fields such as forest economics or silviculture.
• Is willing to work evenings and weekends.
• Driver’s license and driving record acceptable to PSC insurance carrier is preferred.
